Infinity Majilis
Majlis are ‘sitting places’ where community members gather to discuss local events and issues, exchange news, receive guests, socialize, and be entertained. The Majlis is where the Emirati community gathers to resolve problems, pay condolences and hold wedding receptions.
The Majlis are the spaces where the Emirati nation was created, used by family members, tribes, and inhabitants, play an important role in retaining the local values and cultural identity.
Additionally, they represent the quintessential aspect of welcomeness and tolerance in Emirati culture which is in modern days, is one of the greatest achievements the country has retained through its rapid development.
The infinity Majlis installation starts from the tradition of this physical cultural space and adds elements of play and illusion to restore new meanings.
The space, created through the use of parametric design, has been equipped with two mirrors at the ends, that reflect the image of space to infinity, creating the illusion of boundless space.
However, mirrors are one way only: those inside the space become the center of the artistic work and the object of observation of the other visitors outside.
The work interrogates with a ludic approach about human interaction in society and its boundless quality refers to the infinite aspect of openness and welcoming the Emirati nation has demonstrated across its history.
