Something magical and mysterious has landed in the Ragdale woods. It is perceivable through the trees as flowing lines across the space. The outdoor theater proposal is developed around a single, simple gesture defining and uniting the stage area and the audience. The stage, developed along the length of the plot, will allow traditional as well as alternative forms of representation, giving the possibility of immersive performance, where the audience mixed with the actors could be part of the representation. Structure: The proposed structure is made of bundles of split bamboo struts, stiffened by intermediate bamboo posts, designing spatially a ribbon shape that will be enveloping the auditorium and the stage space. Connected to the supporting main bamboo structures, a network of cables will be giving the illusion of surfaces developed in space. Anchor points and foundations are placed along the perimeter of the structure, providing a solid point of support. The cables thus distributed have the double function of materializing the surfaces through ruled surfaces and acting as a shading element for the actors and the audience. A line of LED elements will be integrated into the main structure, materializing its geometry at night and giving the theatrical representation a magical background. Assembly: The structure will be assembled in pieces and installed on site. Locally sourced, the structure will be made in Bundles of bamboo elements tied together with steel wire. The structure will utilize 230 linear meters of freshly cut green Phyllostachys Aurea bamboo, spliced and bound together with stainless steel wire. Bamboo is the biggest member of the grass family and has thousands of uses. It can be pressed, flattened, molded, sliced, burnt or carved. The initial order of bamboo poles will be chopped, cleaned and shipped on site, so that it will arrive as fresh as possible upon delivery. Once on site, the poles will be stored in racks, covered with UV resistant tarp and watered twice a day to keep them green and flexible. Bundling technique: bundling Bamboo is split, then curved and bundled by tied. Split bamboo is very pliable yet strong in tensile, allowing it to be woven or bend into curved forms. Bamboo split can also be bundled or lashed to make very strong structural elements. This technique is called the bundled bamboo split. By using this method, the length and diameter of the curved bamboo can be varied.
